    What Is A Sewage Pump?

A sewage pump, also known as an ejector pump, is used when a bathroom or laundry fixture is located below the grade of the main sewer or septic line. All bathrooms above the grade rely on gravity to move sewage away from the house. However, basement bathrooms and laundries cannot rely on this and so must use a sewage pump. Similar to a sump pump, a sewage pump is installed above a sewage pit and is activated once the liquid level reaches a certain point. The pump moves the waste against gravity and up to the main sewer line. When a sewage pump begins to slow down or fails, it can be a serious plumbing issue.

    Common Sewage Pump Issues

Sewage pumps can encounter some common issues over the course of their lives. Some include:

    Broken or clogged float switch

Most sewage pumps are activated by a float switch to ensure the waste level never goes over a certain point. Much like in a toilet, the float switch consists of a buoyant ball that raises with the water line until it trips an electrical switch which turns the pump on. If this piece becomes clogged or broken, it will not trigger the pump to activate which can lead to sewage overflows and expensive repairs.

    Clogged or damaged impeller

The impeller is the driving force behind the sewage pump and create the vacuum necessary to fight gravity. If this becomes clogged or damaged, the sewage pump cannot function properly and requires repair.

    Clogged discharge line

The line moving the waste from the sewage pump to the main sewer line is the discharge line. If this becomes clogged or the check valve damaged, the waste water will fall back to the sewage pump and not be drained properly.
